Bringing your “other” family member in for an annual wellness examination and appropriate annual diagnostic screenings can not only help to reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy but will help in the detection of certain diseases before your pet is showing signs of being sick. Early detection of most diseases and conditions improves the animal’s prognosis, allows more options for therapy, keeps costs of therapy lower and above all, allows your pet to live a longer, healthier and happier life.
Dogs and cats do age more quickly than people do, so it is very important for them to receive regular examinations. The risks of diseases such as arthritis, kidney disease, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, dental disease and liver disease all increase with age.
The veterinarians at Sackville Animal Hospital recommend wellness examinations every year. Diagnostic screening is recommended for any dog over the age of 7 and any cat over the age of 9. Our annual wellness exam includes;
-comprehensive examination and consult
-dental evaluation and counseling
-appropriate vaccination based on your pets age, breed and lifestyle
-parasite prevention planning
Full wellness diagnostic screening is also offered at these examinations and may include;
- Complete Blood Count (looks at red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This test helps to screen for diseases such as anemia, infection and certain cancers)
- Biochemistry (looks at liver, kidneys, blood sugar, electrolytes, gall bladder and signs of adrenal gland disturbances)
- Urine Testing (looks for evidence of early kidney disease, diabetes, infection, bladder crystals and bladder stones)
- Thyroid Testing (looks for low thyroid levels in dogs and high thyroid levels in cats)
If you have any questions about routine preventative care for your other family member, please call and discuss with our staff or schedule a wellness exam with one of our veterinarians.
