Puppy Wellness Program

Congratulations on your new puppy! Adopting a new puppy is a very exciting time for a person, but it is also a very important time in the life of a dog. Proper nutrition, parasite prevention, vaccination and training will set your dog on the right path for the rest of their lives.

Puppies should receive a series of 3 inoculations, starting at around 8 weeks of age and continuing until approximately 16 weeks of age. During these visits, the veterinary team at Sackville Animal Hospital will advise you regarding nutrition and parasite prevention and perform the vaccinations that are appropriate for your puppy. These visits will also be used to examine your puppy for any evidence of infectious disease and evaluate for evidence of emerging inherited diseases such as heart murmurs and growth abnormalities. You can use these visits to discuss any concerns you may have with raising your puppy, such as house training and behavioural concerns.

The veterinary team here at our hospital recognize that not all dogs will live the same lifestyle and therefore different dogs will have different levels of risk for certain diseases. A vaccination protocol will be tailored during these appointments based on your anticipated travel plans and expected lifestyle of your puppy, both now and as an adult. The basic vaccinations that we recommend are as follows;

6-8 Weeks: Distemper/Parvovirus/Adenovirus/Parainfuenza vaccine (DA2PPv) 1st

10-12 Weeks: DA2PPv 2nd + Kennel Cough (optional)

14-16 Weeks: DA2PPv 3rd + Rabies

Additional vaccines such as the Lyme vaccine and the leptospirosis vaccine may be recommended if you and your veterinarian consider that your dog may be at risk.

Flea, tick, heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention will be covered during these vaccines as well and a preventative plan based on perceived risk will be developed and recommended.

If you have any questions about what your new family member requires, please call and discuss with our staff.
